Homestyle Magazine Article - A Stylish Space for Family Gatherings

As the sun sets on Mike and Karyn Azzopardi’s home, situated atop their five-acre property on River Road, a brilliant hue permeates the expansive walls of windows and casts a glow over their gorgeous kitchen. With a panoramic backdrop of the Salinas Valley, this newly remodeled room was thoughtfully designed in part for evenings such as this.

Besides the spectacular view, the couple’s main inspiration for creating their dream kitchen boiled down to one thing: family. “There are six of us and we spend 90 percent of our time in this room,” Karyn says. Recognizing their need to expand, they called in Tony Driskill of Driskill Construction to take the reigns for the job. “The main thing I think about is making it look like it’s been a part of the house from day one,” Tony says of his approach to adding 500 square feet to the existing 300. Attention to detail became the overall theme of this extensive seven-month remodel.

Admittedly acting on every “little whim and desire,” Karyn and her husband spared no expense in creating the kitchen she describes as Tuscan Italian-ranch style. “We knew it was going to be very highend and top quality,” she says. They entrusted Jeff Bell and partner Glenn Grimes of The Cabinet Shop to design what Karyn boasts are, “the most beautiful cabinets I’ve ever seen,” and the elaborate, hand-turned posts on the island.

“Karyn wanted an aged, distressed look,” Jeff says. “That is right up our alley. It’s safe to say that 80 percent of our jobs involve some level of distressing.” The Cabinet Shop replicated a color that Karyn eyed on one of Jeff’s previous jobs. As a one-stop-shop, the company handles the design, building and finishing in its own factory so that only the installation needs to be completed on site.

One of Mike and Karyn’s chief concerns was configuring the eight-burner Viking range and hibachi grill on the island to take advantage of the view while cooking. Since the kitchen sink would have to be incorporated into the wall, Karyn made sure she could still enjoy a kitchen “window”—a hand-painted tile mural above the sink. “This is my Italian vineyard and my oak tree,” she explains.

Of the numerous eye-catching elements, a few are particularly significant to the couple—the custom-made, copper hood, jointly designed by Mike and Tony; Mike’s prized “spirit corner” bar with a five-layer, green onyx granite countertop from Italy; and built-in pizza oven. Ferguson Bath & Kitchen Gallery in Seaside supplied all appliances by Miele, Sub-Zero and Viking, as well as lighting fixtures.

A collaborative labor of love, the remodel accomplished everything the couple wished, keeping with their initial purpose. “This is the gathering room, where the family starts and ends the day. We’re blessed to be able to call it home,” Karyn says smiling.
